Welcome to SabioAcademy.com. Please let us introduce ourselves. At the end of this column, there is a link that will connect you to new student inquiry form. In addition, if you clikc on the menu "Courses" that is near the logo Owl, you will be able to view current classes, their times, tuitions and Fall quarter calendar.
Who we are: SabioAcademy.com started in 2003 in the Chicago area. As the ".com" in our name indicates, we started this academy to bring the education to the 21st century. These teachers will bring 21st century education to you.
What we teach: Our courses are high school and AP level English, Math, and Sciences. We are also one of the very few schools in the nation that offer USAMO preparation level math competition courses taught by 3 USAMO qualifiers Shrenik Shah, Charles Feng, and Randall Laurence.
How we teach 1 Classroom: We teach both in classrooms and on the Internet in real time. Of course, studying in the classroom is an option for only those who live in Glenview and Schaumburg, Illinois, USA. But there is no reason for you to move. Even among those who live near Sabio Academy, only about half of them come to the classroom. The rest takes the class over the Internet because they realize they get the same knowledge without having to waste time on the road.
Barring technical difficulties (such as power outage and hard drive crash) all our classes are recorded and made available to students and parents for review.
How we teach 2 Internet:
Practically all of our courses, including in classroom courses, can be taken on the Internet. But we also offer some Internet-only classes. In order to take our classes on the Internet, you will need the following.

A fast Internet connection: Run this speed test (choose Chicago server on the menu). If the results are above 200 on both directions, then you have the right connection.

A computer: Any computer you bought in the last 2 years will be good enough. If you are having computer problems, At Multitech Systems can fix and certify your computer for Sabio e-Learning class use for a fee. Or you can buy a new Sabio certified unit as well.

A Tablet: We use freehand writing to communicate our concepts exactly the same way we do in person. In order to freehand write on the computer screen, you need to get a Tablet.

A headset. Students and teachers talk to each other during our classes. There are many low cost headsets but we recommend the USB headset to eliminate computer internal noise (EMF Interference). One noisy headset from one student can ruin the entire class. You can test the quality of your headset by using Skype (shown below)

Skype: Skype allows teachers and students to talk to each other. A detailed instructions on how to install and use this free software are shown here

WebEx: WebEx provides a whiteboard where all students and teachers can write and share the contents simultaneously. Sabio already paid for the license so that our students can use it for free. Please follow these instructions to have it ready on your computer.

A Quiet Environment: We ask our students microphones to be open during the class. That's because hearing the student's involuntary "aha!" or "huh?" guides our teachers to teach better, and also such natural responses make the class more real thus more effective. However, Skype and USB headset carry even the pin drop sound with full clarity. Students must take the class in a quiet like a library.
All our Internet classes are recorded and made available to the students and parents to review.
You can join our classes via the Internet from anywhere in the world. We can eliminate the distance but we cannot flatten the Earth. That is, we will still have to deal with the time differences. Our late evening courses can be taken in the morning in Asia.

사비오는 누구인가?: 사비오 학원은 21세기에 맞는 교육을 실현하기 위해 2003년 시카고 지역에서 시작 되었습니다. 우리의 일류 교사진이 21세기의 교육을 실현시키고 있습니다.
사비오는 무엇을 가르치는가?: 사비오 학원은 대입 준비 과정 코스를 중점으로 가르칩니다. AP 과정 ACT SAT 시험 준비도 다 가르칠 뿐 아니라 USAMO 수준의 수학 경시대회 수업도 제공합니다. 저희는 USAMO에 출전 경력이 있는 선생님들이(Shrenik Shah, Charles Feng, Randall Laurence) 이 코스를 가르칩니다.
사비오는 어떻게 가르치는가 1부: 교실 수업: 사비오 학원은 교실 수업과 인터넷 실시간 수업 두가지를 다 제공합니다. 물론 사비오 근교에 거주해야 교실에 올 수 있으나 근교거주 학생도 반 정도는 인터넷 수업을 선호합니다. 길에서 시간을 보내지 않고 효율적으로 지식을 습득할 수 있는 것을 깨닫기 때문입니다.
불가항력의 문제 (절전, 컴퓨터 고장) 가 발생하지 않는 한 모든 수업은 다 녹화가 되어 학생과 학부형이 다시 볼 수 있도록 제공됩니다.
사비오는 어떻게 가르치는가 2부: 인터넷 수업:
교실에서 진행되고 있는 모든 수업이 다 인터넷으로 동시 제공되고 있어 라이드가 여의치 않은 경우, 폭설이 내린 경우등에는 교실 학생도 집에서 수업을 지속할 수 있고 타주에 거주하는 학생도 항상 수업에 참여할 수 있습니다. 사비오의 인터넷 수업에 참여하기 위해서는 다음과 같은 준비가 필요 합니다.
- 고속 인터넷. 이 속도 테스트에서 "Chicago server" 를 선택 하셔서 결과 수치 두개가 다 200이 넘으면 수업에 지장없는 속도입니다.
- 컴퓨터: 지난 2년 내에 구입한 컴퓨터라면 수업 받는데 지장이 없을 것입니다. 바이러스 등으로 문제가 있으시면 IT 고수 회사가 "사비오 수업 준비 보장" 상태로 컴퓨터를 셋업 하는 서비스를 제공합니다. 사비오의 인터넷 수업 준비 보장된 새 컴퓨터도 IT 고수에서 구입 하실 수 있습니다.
- 태블렛: 수학 공식등을 자유자재로 기입하며 수업을 하기 위해서는 태블렛이 필요합니다.
- 헤드셋: 학생과 선생님이 서로 대화를 하며 수업을 진행하기 때문에 항상 듣고 말할 수 있는 헤드세트가 필요 합니다. 컴퓨터 내부에서 발생하는 소음(EMF)을 줄이기 위해서 USB Headset 를 권합니다. 학생 하나의 헤드세트가 소음이 심하면 수업이 제대로 진행될 수 없습니다. 헤드세트의 성능은 Skype 를 이용해 알아 볼 수 있습니다.
- Skype: 이 스카이프 소프트웨어를 사용하여 학생들과 선생님이 서로 대화를 진행할 수 있습니다. 이 소프트웨어를 무료로 설치하는 방법은 여기에 (영어로) 나와 있습니다.
- WebEx: 웹엑스는 학생과 선생님이 실시간으로 쓰고 읽을 수 있는 할 수 있는 공유 칠판을 제공합니다. 사비오의 인터넷 수업은 Skype로 대화하고 WebEx로 보며 진행이 됩니다. 이미 사비오가 사용료를 지불하여 학생들은 무료로 이 소프트웨어를 자신의 컴퓨터에 설치할 수 있습니다. 상세한 설치방법은 여기에 있습니다.
- 조용한 환경: 스카이프와 USB 헤드세트를 사용하면 바늘 떨어지는 소리까지 선명하게 모든 학생들에게 전달이 됩니다. 학생이 수업중 무의식중에 말하는 "아하" 나 "어?" 같은 소리가 있어야 더 효과적으로 수업을 진행할 수 있기 때문에 수업 내내 마이크를 켜 놓고 있도록 권합니다. 하지만 학생 주위가 소란하면 수업 도중에 주위에서 발생하는 모든 소리가 들려 수업에 방해가 되니 수업에 참여하는 시간만은 조용한 환경을 조성해 주셔야 합니다. 수업하는 옆에서 하는 대화까지 다 들려 오니 도서관 같이 조용한 환경이 필요합니다.
절전 같은 불가항력의 문제가 발생하지 않는 한 모든 인터넷 수업은 녹화가 되어 학생이 복습할 수 있도록 제공됩니다.
인터넷이 지구의 거리를 축소시켰지만 납작하게 만들지는 못했습니다. 먼 곳에서 인터넷 수업을 받는 학생은 시차 문제를 극복해 하는데 한국의 아침 9시에 시카고의 저녁 7시 수업을 들을 수 있으니 의욕이 있으면 가능합니다.
